This trifle is made of slightly sweetened vanilla wafers, a yellow custard, and a bit of chocolate.
Servings: 1 (9*9-inch) trifle
  • 1 cup sugar
  • [1/2] cup all-purpose flour
  • [1/4] tsp. salt
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 4 large egg yolks, beaten
  • 3 TB. butter
  • 1 TB. vanilla extract
  • 2 cups milk chocolate chips
  • [1/2] cup heavy cream
  • 40 vanilla wafers
  1. In a large pot over medium heat, whisk together sugar, all-purpose flour, salt, and whole milk. Simmer for 4 minutes, continually stirring.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together egg yolks. While whisking, slowly pour 1 cup of hot milk mixture into eggs. Pour egg mixture back into the pot, continue to stir, and simmer for 2 minutes.
  3. Stir in butter and vanilla extract until combined, and remove from heat.
  4. Place milk chocolate chips and heavy cream in a bowl. Using a double boiler or a microwave, melt chocolate.
  5. To form trifle, place a layer of vanilla wafers on the bottom of a 9x9-inch baking dish. Pour [1/2] of custard mixture over cookies, drizzle [1/2] of chocolate mixture over custard, and repeat, ending with a layer of chocolate on top.
  6. Refrigerate for 2 hours before serving.
Tasty Tip
If you don't like or can't find vanilla wafers, you can use any plain cookie or cracker you like.
